If you seen scenes from the TV show Spongebob Squarepants where Spongebob goes to boating school, do you think the process of learning to drive a boatmobile is similar to the process on learning to fly in real life?

Example: I think the first episode of the Boating School featured that Spongbob take an oral exam and then the driving portion. Isn't that similar to taking an aviation checkride in real life?

Another example: In the episode "Pizza Delivery", Spongebob conducts a walk around inspection of the boat before starting the boatmobile. Doesn't that mirror the preflight inspection of an airplane in real life?

That's all the examples I can think of for now, but I think the Boating School segments in the show mirrors flight training to certain extent in real life.

I stopped watching kids cartoons when I was 12.

Well, I guess that means you compare yourself to Spongebob....

I suspect if one's checkride experience consisted of pranging an aircraft while being examined by an animated fish, one probably lied about drug usage on their medical application.

No. I never flew THAT badly.

And my instructor never inflated.

But I did see driving students drive like that (!).

I remember my first on-the-road lesson. Another kid in the car got to go first and promptly blew through a red light "'cause it's legal to turn right on red, right?" It's a good thing those cars had dual controls. I think the instructor hit the brakes hard enough to do a Flintstones stop.

I remember one girl in our car didn't realize you had to "unturn" after the turn was made, and she made a great 90 nope, 120 nope, 150 nope, 180 nope, 240 degree right turn into someone's yard before the instructor could get the car stopped. She didn't pass. lol

That spongbob show ticks me off. They're at the bottom of the ocean and drive boats. How's that make sense? They pour glasses of water, set fires and cook Krabby Patties...all under water.

Spongbob has a pet snail (sponge having a snail as a pet) that meows. The worst part is the main character, spongbob, and his best friend Patrick (a starfish) are BOTH total imbeciles. Horrible role models for the target audience.

Squidworth is mean and Mr. Krabs is greedy. Not a single respectable character on the show save Sandy the squirrel who makes infrequent appearances.

So, everybody has massive character flaws and the premise is stupid. How's that like getting a pilot license again?

:)

Not that I disagree with you, but you do exhibit a disturbing level of knowledge on the series....

Speaking of the value of Spongebob and Sandy, I remind my students of the episode where Spongebob goes to visit Sandy in her habitat and drys up and almost dies to illustrate the importance of getting the sponge for tip cleaning wet before you start soldering.

Heck, I don't even have kids, just spent some time watching other people's and I have a disturbing level of knowledge of Spongebob.

You have quite the imagination.... Of all Spongebob characters, I'm probably most like Squidward

Re: Comparing Mrs. Puff's Boating School in the TV show Spongebob with Flight Trainin

On another note, I am a CFI and some of my students have been "spongebob's"

Can you play the clarinet?

Can you play the clarinet?

No, but I am miserable and I hate everything :D. Atleast that's what some tell me..I've once been called a cross between Squidward and Eeyore.

I have kids, trust me there's a lot worse you could have stuck watching.

Spongebob is rather entertaining anyhow. I went to see the movie before I had a kid and laughed my behind off, especially with the addition of David Hasselhof.

There are some cartoons that clearly aren't for kids at all. Like Family Guy or the Simpsons. Or even Bugs Bunny -- kids don't get the James Cagney and Humphrey Bogart references

And, yes, there are many worse things to watch. Scooby Doo drives me batty. Most of the Disney TV stuff is crap and has been since Annette Funicello. And then, there are the Smurfs. At least Barney is gone.
