Hi everyone,

I will be retiring at the end of this year. I currently have a PPL and IR and a High Performance endorsement.

A few years ago I consider getting my commercial so I could fly a little and make some extra money. I talked to the FBO and asked about riding right seat in a Cessna 340 that is used for charter, but we didn't discuss much. Since I only have 1 1/2 hours in a multi engine, ( Aztec, with CFI) I would just be along for the ride.

Would I need a commercial certificate to ride along? What if I helped with the radios and approaches.

Should I even consider doing this after retirement. I realize I am probably too old to fly for hire but was just curious on someone Else's thoughts.

Many companies that charter require the right seat to be commercial as well.

At the airports I have flown, some people with the certs and endorsements can sometimes fill the right seat when they are in a bind. I suggest you speak with them some more.

If not, getting another cert is always fun anyway, keeps us challenged :-)

Geoff,

Thanks!

I will talk to the owner and find out. He is a CFII also. Maybe I can fly and learn all the same time.

A commercial could bring some opportunity - although I haven't really done a whole lot with it. Most of my flying comes from being a CFI.

I spent about $6,000 obtaining my commercial, cfi, and cfii last year. I was able to break-even on that expense by the end of the year.

Look at it this way, if you do not have the certificate, how many of these opportunities will ever pan out?

It's up to the company and the client, and maybe the company's insurer. But even if it's OK with all of them, you can't touch anything on revenue flights unless you get that CP ticket and get qualified and listed by the company as an official copilot.
