Color blindness

Long story short in 2014 my AME said I had color vision issues but gave my a third class medical so I could work on my PPL at the time. After hearing I had color vision issues I threw away my class never took my written and put aviation on the back burner. 12 years later I learned about the secondary testing that could be done and aviation is what I still want! Now my AME this time told me I ( 28 years old) diddnt need to retake my color vision test until I’m 35. My concern is that I will not pass my color vision test at 35 and I’d have wasted thousands of dollars and time trying to progress. I got class three medical again this time with no color vision issues listedcause it wasn’t tested. Do you all have any suggestions or ideas or a path I should look at ?

Are you wanting a career option here? What I've interpreting here is that you were (2014) issued a third class without color vision restriction?.

FAA hasn't to my knowledge conducted a single color vision checkride since 01/01/2025, without all three computer test reports (fails):
Everybody has the waggoner. Pass it in front of somebody known to FAA.
Failing that find the Rabin cone test...there is only one vendor in my region, he's in Michigan. The license is hideously expensive.
Failing that there are only six vendors for the CAD test, in the entire CONUS.

Then and only then will they consider a color vision check ride (resources are in short supply and the FSDO's campaigned for fewer of them-->and they got their wish).

Or, if you are not going to be professional, do a Basic Med. You qualify. Because if you do a new exam, and don't have passing color tests, the AME has to issue you "3rd Class, Not valid for flight at night or under IFR rules". It's even more restrictive now.

What’s with the retest at 35?

Thought it was you were grandfathered if you already had a clear medical?

Grandfathering (or lack of) only applies if he wants a Second or First class and his prior issuance was a 3rd. He didn't say. I also don't get the age 35.

You're color deficient or you aren't. If you passed the medical, you passed the medical. What's the exact issue?

If he doesn't pass color vision screening but otherwise passed he's got a 3rd class "Not valid for flight at night or by IFR".

Admittedly it's unclear and possibly confusing, but he says he has a Class 3 with no color vision restriction.
