I've got the old Collins NAV/COMM as separate units as my secondary radios. The COMM small dial does not tune correctly and will skip numbers and I have to keep turning it until it eventually will get where I want it. I had no idea how expensive new Nav/Comm units were. I can find a cheap replacement on ebay for a few hundred bucks. What do I need to do to make it legal for my plane?

Probably about the same price for a replacement as to get yours fixed. The plastic gear train for the tuning mechanism has to be replaced (as I understand). The 'kota used to have the Collins radios so I had looked into repair of the tuning mechanism.

Anyway, swapping radios for identical units is owner allowed. I've got a Collins 251 if you're interested. It's got bad tuning mech so it wouldn't do you much good except give you a spare to have on the shelf after it's repaired.

Do yourself a favor, give Stellar Avionics a call and at least get a quote. Stellar does very good work and it's a quick turn around. I have used them for my Collins 251, for receive problems.

You'r not facing any legal or airworthiness issues but buying one off ebay is gonna be a crap shoot. I mean, non of these units are spring chickens. I bought one from Bennet Electronics for about $700 for my Champ because I needed something that would use a small footprint of panel space and I figured the segmented LED's would warm the cabin a bit for those rare occasions I go over 5,000 feet.

So far it's worked even if the display warmth is mostly psychological.

If you're gonna keep the same radio, have it repaired and buy another used one as a spare, cheap insurance! :D Years ago we had ARC 422 (?) nav/comms with the plastic gears, I replaced on with a Narco MK12D and kept the old one as a spare for the number 2 radio.:D Those old plastic gears just don't seem to do well after 20-30 years.:D

saw one on ebay just a while ago perusing this thread
