Hangar neighbor has a beautiful Skyranger, it has problematic Goodyear brakes and he knows that some Skyrangers have been retrofitted with Clevelands. He just experienced a ground loop, I'm sure he was cursing the brakes and their loose clips. Anyone know a Skyranger owner who has done the conversion? I do not see it on the STC listings from Cleveland.

Might check with Grove. Some are STC’d.

If neighbor knows it was done can he get N - number to contact owner or

go to FAA Records?

My Grove knowledge is somewhat limited. IIRC they have both Certified

and EXP LINES. Reason for the vote?

My vote would be Grove. Shouldn't be difficult to do it on a Field Approval.

You've never dealt with Portland FSDO......

Will research the Groves, STC's for them are for Piper's, J3's thru PA20's.

It would be worth a call to Grove. Many different antique aircraft have their wheels and brakes. Are there Goodyear brake parts available anymore? I know on the Cubs the brake bladders can't be obtained.

I would suggest looking over AC 23-27 which may offer some relief for replacing the brakes.

One guy serviced his PA-17 with “ brake fluid” . Not 5606.
This is one of the lightest aircraft ever produced. Ruined the expander tubes. Then he bought the Cleveland Conversion Kit.These were dual piston and no STC! FSDO put off for a year amid threats to call his congressman.
IMHO the brake stops the Wheel ; not the aircraft.Hence ; any system that can lock the wheels is adequate. The dual piston is not necessarily more hazardous; it does mandate proper pilot input though . Just like other systems.

I wonder why Grove ignores PA-22’s and Cessna’s ? Evidently they have units for Luscombes but it doesn’t show on website.

Goodrich, Goodyear, Shinn, Cleveland discs, several generations of McCauley and one on PA-18’s I don’t recall the name. I hope Grove is better
than some of these.
