clearance and tower speech speed

When I'm training someone in clearance delivery, they always want to read the clearance fast to impress me or show me how much they know how to read clearances. After they fire one off, I take another flight strip and tell them to pick up a pen and copy. I fire it off as fast if not faster than they did while they try to copy it down. They get my point and it usually works on the first try.

"Clearance on request" can mean a number of things. One, we don't have it yet (if you call more than 30 minutes prior to your proposed departure time, we don't have it.) Two, we have a couple of other things we have to do before we give you the clearance which is write on it and make sure it makes sense. Three, we may have a few ahead of you that are waiting on their clearance. Four, we may be working more than one position and we are on the phone or talking to someone else.
