Hello,
In the early 1990's my wife had a 3rd Class Medical and earned her Private Pilot License SEL . She stopped flying in 1998 when she was pregnant with our first child.
In 2005 she had a single vertigo episode. The doctor gave her Meclizine, and one pill cleared it up.
In 2008 she had four episodes and again the Meclizine helped.
May 2008 - Testing by the an ENT found high frequency hearing loss in both ears which the doctor said is unlikely related to the vertigo.
May 2008 - Videonystagmography (VNG) - results were normal
May 2008 - MRI - results were normal
The doctor said, "We probably won't figure out what's causing this. You may be frustrated that we don't figure it out, but believe me, you'd rather just have to live with it, having a medication that works for you, than figuring out that it's due to something specific. The reason for that is that the "something specific" could be "something scary". With all the systems that play into the brain's interpretation of where it is in space, it becomes very difficult to diagnose vertigo. And if more than one system comes into play, then it's exponentially less likely that we'll figure out the cause. The systems that come into play are numerous: the brain itself, eyes, ears, vestibular system, heart, nerves, muscular/skeletal etc."
May 2008 - ENT referred her to a neurologist for vestibular therapy. She never did this.
She has not experienced another episode since the last one in 2008 prior to her testing.
In 2012 she started flying again (LSA & Gliders). Now she wants to get back to flying non-LSA powered aircraft and will need a current 3rd Class.
Is there a way she can see about getting a new 3rd Class without jeopardizing her ability to fly LSA and gliders if she is denied the 3rd Class?
What is the best course of action if she would like to get a new 3rd Class medical?
For reference she is currently 49 years old.
