In 2007/2008, five prototype single engine jets were built: Eclipse 400 Cirrus Vision SF50 Piper PA-47 PiperJet Epic Victory Diamond D-Jet Cirrus cannot build them fast enough, while all others don't exist. That is amazing.
What I find compelling is the cockpit similary to the piston planes. I can’t afford the upgrade, but to those who can, that’s pretty cool. And great marketing.
They found a small niche in the market that didn’t exist previously. Good for them, they have brought their a game and have some great products. The only way to sell new airplanes in a market full of 40+ year old airplanes is to offer something new and innovative.
And then came the great recession. Sales prospects evaporated for luxury goods. Especially single-engine jets. It's amazing that even one of them survived. And Cirrus wouldn't have survived, except for China.
I’ve had two opportunities to sit in the vision jet and am amazed at the visibility and the simplicity of the panel. The cabin is also really big considering how small it looks on the outside. I think it’s a really cool plane but unfortunately it’s a bit out of my price bracket.
No machine is perfect, but what Cirrus has accomplished is amazing. My friend, Trip, is type rated in the jet. I am eagerly awaiting my first ride in one.
But if you want a new jet, and you don't have five million in your pocket, it's the only game in town.
