Does anyone know if the control shaft bushing (where the control shaft goes through the panel) on Cherokees is supposed to move back and forth within the bushing block? Or is it supposed to be fixed in place? It appears that there is an o-ring around the outside of the bushing, so I'm not sure whether that's supposed to be friction fit or clamped in place within layers of the bushing block, or whether it is supposed to move freely forward and aft within the block, and Piper's maintenance manual doesn't appear to provide that level of detail.

Thanks!

Fixed in place as i recall, should not come out on shaft as yoke is pulled back

Fixed. Not sure what Cherokee you have but on my Warrior II (-161) you can carefully remove the plastic cover which covers the block and engine instrument cluster to access the block. Personally, I use a small flat screwdriver to start the removal at the bulkhead end.
YMMV.

Thanks. I'm trying to figure out how this was put back together incorrectly by the avionics shop, or if it even matters at this point. I did find the exploded parts view in the parts manual, but still haven't found specific installation instructions in the maintenance manual.

In the attached pictures, you can see how the block is assembled, as well as the o-ring position when the bushing slides forward and aft. Not sure whether the o-ring is supposed to be clamped in between the layers of the block assembly, or if there's something else amiss.

My bushing is covered by a plastic trim piece. I like your situation better.

It looks to me like the bushing is sliding in and out of the panel. From the parts diagram it looks like the assembly is missing some parts.
What does the pilot side look like?

I can see this is the passenger side, but I'm having a hard time reconciling the first photo with the others. Where is the gap that allows a visual on the oring in the first photo?

UPDATE: For posterity, the order of the plates here is significant. The two thin plates retain the o-ring between them, which prevents the bushing from moving back and forth. In my case, the inspection gap in the large plate permitted its removal and repositioning on the control wheel shaft without removing the control wheels, and I was able to reassemble everything in the correct order. When assembled as depicted in the parts illustration, the bushing exhibits virtually no movement.
