I've updated the chat plugin to the newest release. I also added an option to your user profile that allows you to opt out of chat if you don't ever plan to go in there and the little red notification bothers you.
To disable: hover over the little profile dude in the upper right hand corner. From there, choose "preferences". On that page you should see an "Opt out of chat" checkbox. Check it and chat will go away for you. The job that makes the change runs approximately every 20 minutes, so it won't be immediate...but it'll go away.
