PBS produced a series called “Chasing the Sun” about the history of commercial aviation. The Web site has lots of information (timelines, details about famous aviators and pilots, and many links). They’ve also set up a bunch of resources for teachers at: http://www.pbs.org/kcet/chasingthesun/resources/resources_lessons.html, including lesson plans.
Any of you working with kids, helping school groups, etc. may find these resources helpful.
Just a little imagination suggests that you could also find some interesting tie-ins between the information in this series and Microsoft Flight Simulator. For example, kids could read about early DC-3 airline routes and then create flight plans and fly them in FS.
