My little point and shoot camera records videos in MJPEG and they will not up load to any hosting web site, plus they can not be sent by E-Mail.

What program can you use to convert them into a useable format?

There are several freeware (and shareware) format converters. I use on on the home computer - will look tonite and see which one.

My favorite thing, going to Costco for a new camera!!!

I'm already camera poor, besides that won't solve the problem of converting what I have already taken.

They show great on my IMAC but when i try to up load them to anywhere.......... zip-nothing :(

Tom,

Can you work iMovie that already came on your Mac? I'd be willing to bet it can import the MJPEG files and then you could export it to the option you need. It also has built-in sharing to e-mail, Youtube, Vimeo, etc.

If that doesn't work, a very popular video transcoding program for the Mac is Handbrake.

Imovie doesn't see the Mjpeg files. unless there is a trick I don't know.

I down loaded that last evening, it doesn't see Mjepg files either.

I must be missing some thing.

Usually most cameras like that are AVI, which is just a container for the MJPEG encoded video and PCM audio.

In Handbrake you typically just select a source file, set a destination file, and pick a preset to go to a compatible format unless you need something advanced.

Can you post the file somewhere?

It is a matter of having the right codec installed. Even videos of the same type, might use a different codec. You might be able download the correct codec for viewing it, or check other players that could possibly include the codec. Have you tried Quicktime?

Grrr. Some cameras are a pain. How are you connecting the camera to your iMac? Using a USB cable from the camera to the Mac? Or are you taking the card out and putting that in the Mac? Does a memory card icon show up on your desktop when the camera or card is connected?

I spotted this tech support document at Apple. Some Motion JPEG files are not shown. This tells you how to find them:

Maybe, show me how to load it with a Mjpeg file.

when it comes up, hit the source button, and navigate to the file your interested in converting.

Then, on the upper right, you should see the "Toggle Presets" button. Click on that and a shelf should slide out with some options. Click iPhone 4 for now, just to convert it to a format we know your Mac will understand.

Then hit the start button, and it should put a file somewhere (should say in the white text box there)

Done :)

EDIT: If you read this before edit, I said hit the browse button. Meant source button. The text as it is now, is correct.

I pull the memory card out of the camera and place it in the IMAC slot and iPhoto automatically imports the pictures and videos.

them saves them into "photos" as Mjpeg files and automatically empties the memory card.

forget email... any video more than a few seconds would be too large to send as an attachment. Can you pull the video into Windows Movie Maker and then save as a standard format? Did camera come with some sort of editing software?... if so, you should be able to re-save into something more standard.

I send movies to the kids all the time, those that were taken by the cam corder, but can't when taken with the point and shoot.

Something seems not right?

Do you have drop box? You can share one and one of us can convert it for you (or tell you what you need to do).

I've had pretty good luck with Windows Media Encoder and VLC. Windows Media Encoder is easier. VLC will do more.

Okay, now we are getting somewhere. The reason you're having a hard time finding the movie files is because iPhoto is importing them from the card. iPhoto has it's own method of storing and managing the database of your photos and movie clips from the camera.

So, you have to export from iPhoto first. Take a look at this link. Start halfway down the page where it says "Even though it may not look like it, iPhoto can export videos. Click on the video you want to export in iPhoto and then click on File and Export."

Here is another Apple tip on getting movies from iPhoto to iMovie:

the problem being iPhoto does not see the video flies, it will see and list the pictures, but not the videos. when the list appears the videos are not there.

What's the extension on the files you see, Tom? .mpeg or .mjpeg? Something else?

MJPEG -- is the Nikon Coolpix camera file format, the big difference is that format is a bunch of single pictures in series, rather than a continuous movie format.

Ugh. I use Windows with All Video Convertor.

Does Nikon have an Application for Mac? If so, that might be the easiest way.

ahh, that's not a movie. That's 30 Jpegs taken a second, and then numbered. You need something that can piece those together.

Let me know if Tango Whiskey's option doesn't work.

I down loaded that program and ran 2 videos thru it, saved them to my movie files, they work but will not up load to FB or here.

always get a message " file format not supported" or other messages to the same effect.

You must have the privacy options set to only allow friends to see it...
