Cessna 182RG/Mooney 201J

How much more is a TR182RG going to cost you though? I think we are in the realm of suggesting things he didn't ask for. If his budget is high enough for a Turbo 182RG, then he might as well look at Bonanzas as well.

If he's narrowed it down to a 182RG or 201, I assume his budget is around 70k. The only other plane I can think to add to that is the Comanche.

The retract Socatas are nice planes (love the interior) but I'm not sure how easy they are to repair comparatively.

It's been a while since I looked, but historically a good M-20J is in the same budget bracket with a TR-182.

A good 201 would closer to 80-120K with standard avionics, 77 lowest because they weren't fully developed, half J, half F

There are several listed around 70k or under with older GPSs.

I guess it depends on whether you want a 530 or not.

But you are right. If you want a nice 201, they are upwards of 100k. So at that point you might as well look at everything. Bonanzas included. If the OPer really has a budget of 80-100k, I wonder why he narrowed it down to only the 182RG and 201? Maybe he just likes those I guess.

There are 3-4 nice Comanches on my field. I've never owned one, but they seem like really good deals and a great compromise plane for someone who wants speed and room/payload.

Gotta get past the blue interior in that one though

Yea, there is cheaper, one had a gear up but was 15 years ago, they always take a hit in price, others had old GPS, original paint, interior, etc
Depends on what you want...

What's the parts situation on the gear now? Did that get straightened out? I recall quite a few AOG R-182s because they couldn't get some gear part there's a problem with on them. I would look into this matter before delving into one. The TR-182 is another option that buys you some more TAS in the 10k-16k range. IIRC it trues over 165 at 12,500.

Take care of the gear. :) It's the pivot assemblies (which swing the gear down on a rack & pinion setup driven by a separate actuator) that are rare and expensive.

Fortunately, there's now a shop in Oregon that is FAA PMA approved to overhaul these if they break. They do good work, but it's not cheap (about $9500 exchange for one pivot). Have a type-specific knowledgeable mechanic help you with the pre-buy--there are tell-tale signs if there's going to be a problem. All the owners I've talked with have had zero issues. It's certainly not a reason to stay away from the type.

Here's an example of their pivot rebuild quality:
