It seems like the rear seats lay back too far. Is there a means to adjust them or fix them more upright?

Just put the rear passengers in the Baggage space....

On our club's 182P, there is a release lever on outside of the lower cushion against the fuselage wall. Pull up to release the catch. Seat back can be tilted forward to it's front limit, and then pushed back to the first of 3 stops.

+1. You have to kind of feel for it as its buried down between the seat and the wall.

Feel toward rear corner of seat, near the hinge.

Will that work for a C172 left front seat?? The one i'm using at my flight school is angled just far back enough that it kills my back if I don't use a back cushion...

Depending on the model of the 172, there may be some adjustment cranks on the front edge. One controls height, other controls tilt of the back cushion.
