Is this bad enough to be considered not airworthy

Not from what I can see in the pictures, pretty typical of these old aircraft. get it preserved ASAP.

I don’t know specifics about the pictured corrosion, maybe consider a home job ‘Corrosion X’ treatment at a minimum. It may work better as things warm a bit, depending on location.

That rusty bolt head in picture #3: not a good sign. I have found badly corroded aluminum under rusty steel hardware. Electrolytic (galvanic) corrosion between dissimilar metals. Might be smart to take some of that hardware out and check, and install new hardware.

Are there any better methods nowadays regarding dissimilar metals in hardware vs airframe?

Aluminum washers under the bolt head and nut is the standard practice. The manufacturers of small airplanes usually didn't bother. Nobody expected these things to outlast three generations of owners.
