Pilot Posts Self-Induced Off-Airport Landing Video

"Complacency has no place in soaring" are the words Larry Hockensmith uses to open a brief description of a video that ends with him crashing a Schweizer 1-26 into a row of mailboxes and a few trash cans ... and they're also the point. Hockensmith, a student glider pilot and 40-year licensed power pilot, posted the video to YouTube with a simple message. "I was trained better than to have lingered on the lee-side of a ridge over rough terrain," he writes. "The dramatic outlanding was due to my actions exclusively." He says he has shared the video with his instructor, the FAA and the NTSB and those interactions have helped grow his skills. He also says there's more to come and issues a challenge.

The video is 16 minutes in its uncut form and "shows every second of the events" that led to the crash. At Hockensmith's request, viewers are welcome to try to "spot how the differences between a power pilot's training and a glider pilot's training could have contributed to this outcome." As of Friday, Hockensmith had only posted one clip, of 1 minute 18 seconds, of the Dec. 28, 2011 flight, but "more videos on this are coming." The first clip shows the approach and landing. And the rather sudden stop at the end. In his own words, the landing was "almost perfect" ... "for a power pilot."

I have yet to see the longer version referred to. I can't attribute where this was quoted from; got it in this format from a glider buddy via email.

My take on it:

Too fast and landed long plus overshooting the base to final turn. It looks like he had it made until he went past the big clearing before staying on the ground. He simply ran off the end of the runway.

Granted he was low to start with and hunting for somewhere to put down in a bad place however a longer approach following the road might have helped by going left further on base and making a longer final so he's not maneuvering where he needed to be dumping speed. That's assuming he decided that was where he was going to land early enough and it wasn't one of those damndamndamndamn-ok right there will do turn now things.

I can see it being easy to get into that situation and not having much of a better outcome especially if you're use to flying planes that don't glide very well. Putting a 150 or 172 down right about where that crossing road was past that last tree would have been rather easy to stop in time. Good lesson though.

He passed a few fields that he could have landed on. Simply do an extended downwind and then turn around and slip with dive brakes. Land upslope and hit the fence at the end. Free braking action!

I was thinking the same thing, watching the video I spotted two fields that I thought he was going to turn into for a landing and probably an over-run. I wasn't expecting the road, that would not have been my first choice with long (and low) wings.

Wasn't my butt in the seat though, so I can't criticize.

Agreed he could have taken the glider down to min sink speed and slowly plopped it onto one of the fields.

I agree he did seem to be moving very fast.
