Kind of losing faith in humanity when these folks on this escalator couldn't figure out what to do when it suddenly switched directions. I can understand those at the bottom being caught off guard and falling but the people half way up, come on people. :dunno:

College Station mall had a power failure last year. Some on the escalator were stranded for hours.

Ya see all those stunned, unhurt people walking away from the bottom of the escalotor..... Mark my words, by tomorrow morning, all of them will be in wheelchairs, with neck braces and will have lawyers screaming they need 3.6 million to "ease "their pain....:mad2::mad2::mad2:

That's nothing. Remember when a tornado landed smack onto the college library?

It destroyed both books.

And one of them weren't colored in yet either.

Nothing quite as scary as having an escalator reverse directions on you

What you dont see is that there's a little dorky looking guy in the escalator control room laughing his a$$ off.

I spent 25 years in urban EMS and law enforcement. This is not even remotely the stupidest thing I've seen. Maybe not even in the top half.

No, I'm not cynical at all.
As another poster here has on his sig---> Stupid kills, but not enough to really help.

In EMS I had the epiphany that we were in an eternal struggle against the forces of natural selection. So I went to law enforcement where I could assist them instead.

Have you ever wondered why most people stand on escalsators instead of walking like they would on stationary stairs? It could be pure laziness but my guess is that this is what they were told to do by their mothers when they were little.

What's worse is to see (some) Americans visit other countries where the escalators are triggered by motion detectors - the escalators are stopped until someone approaches, then they turn on. Most Americans are totally befuddled by such things. And what's worse is those places where the escalators will operate in either direction based on the direction that a person approaches.

By not operating the escalators when there are no riders, it saves money and energy....

The escalator was packed. When people started piling up a the bottom, the folks up top had no option but to jump off or do a high speed stair master to keep from adding to the scrum.

I agree, they could not easily sprout wings and fly. It was free wheeling until the weight was reduced or the stop switch was pushed. They have brakes that are supposed to engage when a fault is detected. Many of these 30+ yr old units are not maintained properly. If the brake is inop, then the automatic or manual brake does no good. All you have left is to get a majority of the weight off to stop it. I bet if your elderly Mother was at the bottom, you would think differently. My family uses the stairs instead of escalators and elevators for exercise and safety.

All you need is one person with a mobility problem such as someone elderly and Wham bottle neck and cluster bomb.. I do have to ask what the police officer was doing just standing there at the bottom.

You want a whiskey tango foxtrot?

My wife showed me an obnoxious facebook post yesterday with a simple three term arithmetical problem. Nearly 100,000 people commented on it, and perhaps 2/3 had the wrong answer. I was flabbergasted.

Adam, if the "mobility impaired" person reached the top of the escalator, what would they have done? Walk off, right?

So....turn around....oh, look, time to walk off.

Plain and simple fact, people in New Jersey are stupid. That's the only possible explanation.

I would like to hear some stories, please!

Well, there was the guy on a 12 foot ladder, cutting a dead branch off a tree. And the dead branch was directly over his head. Branch cracked his skull when it fell (onto his head), fell 12 feet, broke both legs, and the chainsaw (blunt end, fortunately) hit him in the chest and gave him a flail segment (about 6 broken ribs).

I've always said, cops and medics would be a lot less busy if people watched Roadrunner cartoons growing up. I learned valuable life lessons, like:

1 - Don't play with dynamite
2 - Don't cut the branch you're sitting on
3 - Stay out of the middle of the road
4 - Stay away from the edge of the cliff
5 - Don't buy ANYTHING from ACME

There was the guy who lied about his name (he had a warrant), while forgetting that he wasn't wearing a shirt and his name was tattoo'd on his chest.

There was the guy who decided to pull an unloaded gun on a bunch of gangbangers, who had *loaded* guns.

There was the guy who pulled a knife on a cop and got shot, the day after another guy pulled a knife on a cop and got shot, which in turn was a day after another guy pulled a knife on a cop and got shot.
OK, maybe the first guy had forgotten that it was a bad career move to pull a knife on a cop. And maybe the second guy slept in and didn't hear about the first guy.
But the THIRD guy had to have heard about the first two batting .000 with that strategy.
