I'm not classy enough to have a smart phone. I wanted to show some people how to do something with my jobs app. It needs the camera though. More then one said theirs was disabled. Why would someone disable the camera?

I work on new product lines where security and confidentiality is high. Of about 800 people on the project, we only have about 10 with their cameras turned on. The iPhone has the ability to have someone enter a password to lock the camera.

Many companies use MDM (mobile device management) software to restrict features on phones. Mostly for company security reasons - a lot of big companies don't permit cameras on their facilities at all. Confidentiality is high.

Other features that might be disabled are private email services, gps, texting, app installation (restricted to company portals), etc.

On many smartphones malicious software/apps can turn on cameras or microphones and send the data gathered to a remote location. This can be used for corporate espionage (or spousal espionage....)

What is a smartypants phone? You mean my flip phone is not smart? It can make phone calls, text, take pictures and wake me up on time. The best part: it doesn't have Fagbook, thank Lord.

It's not smart because you can't use it for ForeFlight...

Similar issue for me. On the last project I worked, in order to have any kind of personal electronic device on our camp, it had to have WiFi, IR and Bluetooth turned off, as well as taping over the camera if it had one. Even then, there was some areas where you could not carry it with you.

One friend works at a place where if you forget and bring your cell phone of any sort through the front gate, it's confiscated, never to return. He's lost four in a decade or so.

They have the TSA running security at places of work (besides airports) now?

Yep.

Even worse if one accidentally brings one into a SCIF.

My guess is the phone has a greater intellectual capacity than the owner...that's saying quite a bit for a "dumb" phone...
