"Preflight stuff" for a 172 consists of a sample cup, a few rags and a bottle of oil? Small tray in the baggage compartment or under the backseat.

That's where I keep mine, back of the pilots seat because it is easy to get to during pre flight. Oil, funnel and rag is in a box in the baggage compartment.
