The "H" is a bit of an anemic plane but boy that Conti O-300 engine sure runs smooth I mean scary smooth. The price sure makes it tanalizing.

I will defy any pilot to be able to see a difference between 145 horse power and 150 horse power in a 172.

the H actually has a better useful load than the later 172s

What about the 160hp 172N?

I used to fly a 172F pretty regularly. I liked the smoothness of the O-300, too. Maybe it was an exception, but seat of the pants wise it didn't feel any weaker than some O-320 powered 172s I've flown. I don't remember how many hours it had on the engine, though.

Only aneimic on those 90* days trying to get off of Brayden Airpark:fcross: I loved flying the "H", and once you knew the plane well, I felt comfortable getting in and out of most places around here. Definitely a smooth purring engine and loved being leaned out.

Why do you believe Cessna needed the 160 horse power 0-320-H2AD? Did Cessna want it to climb faster or do you think the heavier aircraft required it to meet certification requirements?

IAW the book "wings for the World" Written by William Thompson (test pilot for Cessna for many years) the best 172 built was 63-67. best climb rate, best cabin noise, best handling, and best craftsmanship of all the line.

I have absolutely no idea and about 190 hours TT in my logbook. Reason I'm asking is that the 172N model is the only 172 I've flown.

I have about 500 hours in 70611 which just went to a new owner in Canada, it was my favorite ride for many years, but 1604F is a 67 and it had a better useful load and would keep up with the 70611 a -N any day.

70611 had the 160 horse 0-230-H2AD and had been overhauled 3 times in 3400 hours, 1604F had the 0-300-D and had 2600 hours on the 0-300 and had never been overhauled.

cost of ownership is lower in the 0-300 than any of the 0-320 powered 172s.

This one belongs to the Center O Flying Club based out of OLM. I have a few hours in 8829Z. I will attest to the smoothness of that 6 cylinder engine. This plane is VFR only. The window on the pilot's door opens fully, which is handy when you want to take pictures.

I had a 64 E model, the O-300 is a very smooth engine with a fuel burn of 8 GPH. I love the manual flaps of the earlier models. I sure miss that old plane.

Ghery, buy that 172, send me the engine when you no longer trust it, I'll overhaul it at cost.
