Buying an aeronca champ or j3?

Neither, I'd be looking at a Cessna 140 in that genre.

Why? There's nothing about a 140 that would set it out front of any of the others. I think it boils down to condition and price and there's no good reason to lock yourself into a specific model. This is why a Cub is out of the picture because it's just flat out going to be over priced. Also, I wouldn't lock myself into LSA qualified unless it were absolutely necessary because again, you're going to pay more for less airplane.
 
I know pilots who swear by both. Two great airplanes, you really can't go wrong.

Maybe, maybe not. With a T-craft or Chief you're pretty competitive with a 140 or a 120.
