Buying a Cirrus

The Standard Cirrus will give an honest 35:1 L/D.

Tony, when are you going to finish the rebuild/refinish of Leah's glider?

hopefully this summer. we've got a friends Std Austria in the garage right now that ended up being more work than planned (of course) Once it is finished then we go back to the Cherokee.

Seriously klaus test flew your ship. I'm jealous...

Now I've got to find a libelle test flown by the Hähnle's...

Great looking plane, Tony, I'm jealous. You should have stopped by for coffee on the way by. Farming has been seriously interfering with glider flying this year. Don Gurnett went to the dark side and got a self-launch Ventus. Terry Edmonds did over 700 km in his DG800 last week.

Jim, we stayed down on I-70 so didn't end up in your neck of the woods. I've been watching those guys on OLC this spring, lots of big flights from eastern Iowa!

well i had my first soaring flights in Kate this weekend. It was fun! I am getting used to the way she handles and working out how it reacts to thermals. Sunday I felt like I was doing a better job staying in the lift although I think I was flying too slow on Sunday.

Saturday I did 2 laps around a 66 mile triangle. Between the much better performance of the Std. Cirrus and the good soaring conditions I was always within glide range of home. First lap was about 42 mph but the second was 55 mph.

Sunday I declared a 220 mile out and return but with a late start and generally blue skies I turned back early and ended up with about 150 miles. It was great soaring even with no clouds, I was up to 10,500 at least 3 times with very strong climbs averaging 6-700 fpm. From 10,500 i only needed on climb and a loss of about 4000 feet to make it 72 miles home, with a tailwind of course. That is the kind of performance I can get used to.

Yesterday I had a great flight in Kate. I spent the morning instructing and gave a ride in the club Grob so I didn't get in the air until 3 PM but the lift was great and I still had time to complete my declared goal of setting a new standard class 200km triangle state speed record. 58.5 mph average. I was able to get permission from Wichita Approach to overfly the Class C below 10,000 (no transponder in the glider) which allowed me to get the last climb I needed to get final glide to sunflower. The last several miles were at 100ish knots burning off altitude. Fun!
