Van Allen taught at the University of Iowa and was one of Iowas "Famous People" Definitely a hero to us space nerds.

As an aside, one of his students in the late 50s was a 19 yr old named Don Gurnett. Don helped him with the original sattelites he was building and is now a Physics professor at Iowa and is still working on space projects. Im pretty sure he is involved in the Cassini mission to Saturn and several other things floating around outer space. He also holds several state soaring records and flew in many contests back in the 70s. Unbelievable though, been sending stuff to space since he was 19.
