Used to be, you could find some really nice Cessnas over on the CAP auction site.

Here are their 172s:

$65k for a run-out P model?

$45k for a run-out P model with a broken wing spar????

The 182s aren't as bad, but there are are still some head scratchers in there:
https://www.gocivilairpatrol.com/me...ics-mission-resources/aircraft-for-sale/182s/

But $65k for a 182 making metal?

$81k for a run-out?

$79k for a tear-down?

Mind you, these are opening bid prices.

They had some beavers for sale a couple years back

That really isn't out of the realm of 172P prices. Overall low time as well for a 172..

Riding the big ones is like riding a moped. It's all good until your friends find out....

I'm no expert on airplane pricing, but when I saw the advertised condition of those planes, the "minimum bids" on some of them seemed delusional to me.

Would you really prefer a radial over a pt6?

Neither one is fast, and both engines guzzle fuel. Turbine is ugly, tail doesn’t look right. Radials are easier to work on and much cheaper, too, so yeah, I like em big and round.

I thought the one in your picture was turbine. That’s why I asked. If I’m on a tight budget I can get the radial preference but if I were hauling self loading cargo I would want the pt6

Ah, I see. Indeed, pic is a PT-6 powered, pointy nosed beast. I’m an old school guy, though, and get all warm and tingly when I hear a radial loping aling.

Ex CAP pilot here - if you do consider buying one, treat it just like any other airplane buy: Usually they were maintained OK, about as well as a reputable FBO. But not always - there were CAP aircraft I would not fly a seond time. The 172s can have a Larry Lightbulb comm panel, what with the extra radios, etc., and they are a rats nest of relays, and can have bleed through and static issues, big time. The 172s usually do not have an IFR GPS, but often have the 180HP upgrade, which was nice.
