Looking for a good book to give as a gift to a new college grad.

I'm thinking of a Dave Ramsey, or similar, financial planning reference. There just happens to be no student loans worry about, so don't ned a "how to get out of debt" lesson plan.

Ramsey has a lot of titles, I'm not sure which one would be best, or if there is another author that's also giving good info?

I remember Random Walk. Somewhere I still have a very early edition - I forgot about that one.

Well, a current edition is worth a read, but you may also enjoy:

Fooled by Randomness, Nassem Taleb

the signal and the noise, Nate Silver
http://www.amazon.com/The-Signal-Noise-Predictions-Fail-but/dp/0143125087

These might be a little much for a fresh grad, mostly because they assume a lot of life's context that a grad may not yet have. But if you like them and want to pass them along they certainly won't do the grad any harm.

All good ideas. How about more basic? Things like, "This is an IRA, this is how it works. This is a 401(k), this is how it works. This is a mutual fund...this is insurance..."

Books on investing are good, but learning a budget and savings strategy is a first step.

Jane Bryant Quinn has a book that I gave my kids that covers all the basics you mentioned plus more. A good reference source.

Suzie Orman also has books about basic financial topics such as IRAs, checking accounts, loans etc.

A Random Walk Down Wall Street is also in my library.

Fooled By Randomness or The Black Swan are good choices as well.

The one book I most highly recommend for a beginner, however, is:

I've heard Dave Ramsey's show, and I kind of have mixed feelings about him. He seems intelligent and knowledgeable, but it's very rare when I pick up some advice that I actually find beneficial.

i.e. "Dave, I live in Oklahoma and I owe five thousand dollars on a car loan at 22% interest. Do you think I should pay it off now?"

"Yes."

"Gee Dave, thanks for the advice."

"Have a nice day."

Sort of like that old Dr. Laura show.

"Dr. Laura, I have a moral dilemma. My boyfriend beats me, abuses my children and sodomizes my dog, what should I do?"

Get a cat?

Oh, you weren't looking for an answer?

I've seen several books aimed at younger folks just starting out - finished with school, first job, possibly making more than they are spending for the first time ever. The credit card applications come in, the new car sales pitches come fast and hard, the temptation to get a loan or put something on credit "just this one time" is pretty strong... Those books tend to point out the pluses and minuses, explain what you are getting yourself into, and how to start a savings strategy.

I actually gave this one as a gift a couple years ago based on a recommendation ( at least I THINK this is the one ):

I read one of Ramsey's books, checked it out from the library. I'd heard a lot about him but didn't have any idea what he was about, so I figured a library checkout would be worth a look. It seemed like he had a lot of common sense suggestions and recommendations. Some I agreed with, some I didn't. That book had the kind of advice you can give someone but they won't listen unless they see it in a book or on TV or pay for it at a seminar.
