Board Certified Psychiatrist

Hello all,

Is anyone aware of a list or resource available that you can use to locate a psychiatrist local to you to help navigate the SSRI pathway? Assuming someone starting from scratch, I would think it would be valuable to start with someone who knows the inner workings of the FAA.

I believe the better choice is going to be a HIMS Aviation Medical Examiner instead of a psychiatrist you chosen at random off of a list. The reason is you might pick one of the latter who isn't properly aware of what it is you seek or isn't knowledgeable in how to interface with the FAA.

The HIMS AME is very knowledgeable in the process, can provide the proper guidance, can direct you to the correct resources as needed/required, and can assist with the application to the FAA medial certification branch.

I have attached a PDF of the HIMS AME's that was downloaded from the FAA website. Hopefully there is one close to you.

Further, I believe the rules have changed. The FAA used to allow any board-certified PSYCHIATRIST to make the review before but now they want things run through HIMS.
 
I second the HIMS AME advise. Mine was able to point me to a qualified psych pretty easily. Beyond that I hope you’re ready to wait....I’ve been waiting 6 weeks for a report after the evaluation from my HIMS Psych.
 
I wasted a lot of money going to just a board certified shrink when I need an evaluation. Ended up having to starting over with a HIMS guy after the FAA didn't like what the board certified person reported. BTW, everything turned out ++.

Which is ridiculous, because the letter from OKC says nothing about requiring a HIMS guy - just a board certified psych with aeromedical knowledge. :frown2:
 
They really do make it about as hard as possible. It’s like they really don’t want to certify people. Their SSRI path 1 that is published....by them...says 60 days off of meds and a letter from treating physician. What they don’t tell you is what they really mean is 90 days and a psych exam. Troubling...especially when it will take them 2 months to respond to you giving them everything they ask for in their own guidelines.
 
I reached out to my local flight surgeons office on this , BTW, and even they weren’t clear on what is “required”.
 
David, you have to start with a HIMS AME; the psychiatrist list is held there and we are dismissed if we publish same. There are multiple reasons for that, too....

He was a gas passer in his former life, but now is an "occupational medicine specialist."
