My son turns 40 in a few days and I remember my 40th as a traumatic day. I'd like to give him a different gift than usual. While looking around for awhile, I happened upon something that seemed perfect. http://www.flyincalendar.com/event_detail.cfm?e=8961&m=2&y=2010

He is living in Oceanside California, which turns out to be probably 500 miles from the site, too far to drive. He doesn't fly. I was wondering if anyone who lives closer to Oceanside (I live in NY) can recommend something similar that would cost me $200 or less? They have two children and I'd send him a check to cover babysitting as well.

If he's a golfer and/or enjoys the spa treatment, swimming pool kind of thing you might be able to afford http://www.lacosta.com/

If they like to fly, my wife and I might be able to fly them to Furnace Creek for brunch http://www.furnacecreekresort.com/ (I have to check with the boss)

Another fun place is http://www.santaynezinn.com/

I would like that, but I phoned my son's wife to check it out and she tells me that he just was sent to Afghanistan. Will return for Thanksgiving. sigh.

Thanks for the ideas, though. I had a great several hours vicariously visiting all those lovely inns.

Send him a bunch of stuff from mom. Nothing like getting a care package from home. Cookies, baked goods, frizbees, Supersoaker squirt guns were a big hit. Just being able to open a box from mom, and sharing it with his buddies makes being away from home a little better, even when you hit 40.

What does he do in the service?

If he's in the military something for both you and his wife.

He is going as a civilian trainer for the UN -- he doesn't really talk about his work. He says he will be in a secure area, but that means he will be unable to go anywhere and is already bored.

I really appreciate the support, both public and private messages, from members of this board. Once he has a mailing address, I'll be sure to send care packages and let him know that this community has his best wishes in mind as well.:)

Thanks.
Thanks.

John phoned me from Belgium this evening on Skype. He asked me to join it, so I did and then I found his id by putting in his email address and added him as a contact. He has gone to bed, so I won't call him.

I don't know how to use Skype. What do I do next?

It is pretty intuitive, although I have never used Skype video calling capability. If he is in your contact list, it will show you (by changing the icon and the icon color to green, next to his name in the contact list) when your contact - in this case your son - is also logged on. Make sure your speakers are on and your microphone is hooked up. Then just hit the green telephone icon near the bottom of the Skype panel.

That's it!

Just thought I'd add a comment for anyone who remembers this:

My son was on vacation in Mexico with his wife last week, so he was not in Afghanistan during the recent brouhaha. However, he is on his way back through a circuitous route because the normal direct route is no longer open.

As usual, I'm confident and worried.

With you on that one Aunt Peggy. My son is in Afghanistan until late April or early May. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your son.

John

Thanks. And here's a hug and warm thoughts for you and your family, too.
