Biden Expected to Nominate Former FAA Deputy Whitaker to Lead Agency

Well, at least his background reads better than previous candidates. He probably doesn’t think “airfoil” is an aviation version of tinfoil.

Sorry about that…redid the link. Please “X” the pop-up where it says subscribe and it should work.

President Biden is expected to nominate Mike Whitaker, who served as the Federal Aviation Administration’s deputy chief during the Obama administration, to be the agency’s next permanent leader, people familiar with the matter said.

An official announcement by the Biden administration about Whitaker’s anticipated nomination had recently been expected as soon as next week, these people said. They said the plans haven’t been finalized and could change.

The FAA is navigating a host of challenges, including a shortage of air-traffic controllers, weather-driven disruptions to the busy summer travel season and a series of near-collisions at U.S. airports. The agency is working to upgrade technology systems after a January breakdownprompted the first nationwide flight halt since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

From 2013 to 2016, Whitaker served as deputy administrator at the FAA. During his time at the regulator, he focused in part on upgrading the nation’s air-traffic system.
