Some websites require a password that includes a special character like ~!@#$;' etc. And many other sites allow special characters, even if they aren't required.

Each time I encounter this, however, it seems that only certain special characters are allowed, and others are not, but frustratingly the list of allowed characters varies from one website to another.

So here's the question: What are the most widely accepted special characters?

And are any of these special characters so universally accepted that they will always work on any website?

I really pi$$ed off one of my other VMware engineers.. I put a | in the root password.. when he tries to use it in a command line tool it flips out..

I would say that "!", "$", and "@" are usually a safe bet.
