I realize now that if people don't post in the thread, it won't get bumped and people might miss it. So, I chose Today's Test Pilots because they have to be able to get into any airplane given to them, including types that have never been in the air and then fly it to the edges of it's flight envelope. They need to be the masters of any airplane.

What about your choices?

Isn't modern test piloting conformity testing more so then black death superhero stuff? Yawn. You need excellent consistent pilots, but what a boring lot. Well look here the eggheads were wrong they predicted Vy one knot off....

What are the criteria that determines who the best pilots were/are? Bob Hoover comes to my mind, but what determines that he was even a good pilot?

I think this thread should be titled; "What is your favorite kind of pilot?"

I like the old airmail era, so I'll pick that.

I don't know, maybe ask the test pilot that had to bail out of the Skycatcher not too long ago if it was boring or not.

Meh. One. How often does that happen to test pilots these days? There far are more glider pilot and jump pilot bailouts, then test pilot bailouts.
