OK...so maybe I'm the last pilot around to discover this. But if there's even one pilot who hasn't discovered it, this post is worth it.

I'm a huge checklist fan...no matter how repetitious. But I hate:

* Carrying around the checklist and keeping track of where I am as I do the exterior prefllight.

* Thinking about finding it quickly if the event of an emergency, even if...yes...I keep it in the pocket.

* Switching back and forth between the engine read-out and the electronic checklist display on my Avidyne MFD.

* Shifting my eyes to the inside of the plane when they can be outside.

The Solution: Record checklists on your iPhone or other SmartPhone using the Voice Memo feature. Put a piece of Velcro on your phone, and stick it somewhere on the panel or close by where you can get to it quickly. Further:

* If you have a Bluetooth headset (e.g., Bose A20), then you can for get wires on the inside. Just play the appropriate checklist back when you need it. Otherwise, use the Aux function if you have one.

* For the outside preflight, pack a pair of $20 earpieces

Like I said, maybe everyone else knows this. For me, it's making a huge difference...more attention paid to what I'm doing and flying the plane. I read somewhere that there's an app that does this too. That's fantastic, but the Voice Memo feature also works extremely well.

Would love to hear other ideas!

Is that a "check" list or a "to do" list?
Do you check your audio against a checklist?

I just use a flow.

I had a friend who came up with an audio check list about 10 years ago using his ipaq PDA. He sent the audio out into the aircraft audio so no earphones necessary.

VWBob,
I'm sure you'll get some sarcastic comment on this but not from me. With the wireless technology available today, Bluetooth should make this a slam-dunk winner ! I realize the communications/navigation Bluetooth compatible headsets are just breaking into the market now but, shortly should enable us to simply use the same ear interface inside and out of the cockpit and do away with that limitation on preflight checks. Inside, I couldn't agree more. I have long been a proponent of wireless communication in the cockpit and getting rid of those crazy wire snakes ! One concept that you didn't mention is the confirmation phase of having completed each step. this could be implemented by simply requiring an audio input from the person doing the check before proceeding to the next step in the checklist.
