I'm 40 and have been looking into a career move in the next few years and have been researching aviation. I have frequent palpitations (they occur on and off, when on sometimes I have several per minute and occasional short bursts that last a couple seconds). I've had ekgs and holter monitors and they have been ruled as benign though its been a few years since ive had them checked up. Are these likely to be problematic in getting 1st or 2nd class medical certificates?

Depends on what the actual underlying rhythm is.....
Thh "shotgun qual" for that is stress treadmill, Rhythm monitor and echocardiogram.

I had a stress test and several occurred during and the cardiologist told me it was nothing to worry about

Good luck!

First step is to identify the rhythm abnormality (if any). Holter recordings are ok if you have daily symptoms and can be worn for 24 or 48 hours. There are now wearable monitors that can be used for a week or two. If I had to guess the FAA may prefer (or require) the longer monitoring option. As Dr Chien stated above a treadmill stress test and echo are pretty standard options in the evaluation of palpitations, even for non pilots. Avoidance of substances such as caffeine, nicotine and and alcohol is often recommended to reduce the occurrence of palpitations.
