Battery-powered radio

I volunteered to be the organizer of our family's emergency plan. We live near a nuclear site, and downwind from an active volcano. Our son-in-law is a geologist who informs us about subduction zones ... and we just generally have become more aware that a little pre-planning, beyond candles and flashlights, would be good.

A key item on the list is a battery-powered radio, for emergency broadcasts. Does anyone have experience with a good battery-powered radio?

My emergency radio receiver is a Sony ICF-SW7600GR.

It is a lot of radio for the money and is quite entertaining to use just for fun.
