I have been flying under a basic med certificate. 6 weeks ago I had an aortic aneurysm and my stomach filled with blood. Surgeons repaired it and recently told me the repair is quite permanent and would not occur again. Does anyone know if I could ever fly again under the basic med program?

Aortic aneurysms are not covered in the list of cardiovascular incidents requiring the (one-time) special issuance before basic med. They're pretty specific:

  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack).
  • Coronary heart disease that has required treatment (stent, bypass, angioplasty).
  • Cardiac valve replacement.
  • Heart replacement.
It's up to you and your physician.

Flyingron is literally correct. but Man I'm glad you're still alive.
An aortic aneurysm however is a marker for CAD however- and you might want to find a off bookway to know about your coronaries....in the event that they didn't do a coronary cath as part of your workup (e.g, "no time left to do one we're going to the O.R, now.....").

It is a sad state of affairs with the FAA when pilots feel they have to go off book to get help for this kind of thing.
