AV8OR system with simple subscription

Buy used iPad 16GB, download Foreflight/other software, similar subscription.

Don't make it complicated.

I have both. The iPad stays in the the left seat as an AFD. GNS530 is in the panel, AV8OR is yoke mounted and it's what I play with for navigation stuff so I don't have to dink with the 530 while it's chugging along.

I'd take the AV8OR if I only could use the device in question for flying. The AV8OR has a terrain and obstacle database that's nice if you're under a Class B shelf dodging towers…or dodging towers anywhere for that matter. I haven't spent a dime on it 2 years and paid $150.00 for it.. NEW.

Assuming you will plug in a GPS unit? I would hands down go with the ipad and forflight for all the charts and flight planning that "accidentally" happens when you turn it on. Not including the other weather apps and accessibility for preflight available.

I would also avoid the rechargeable gps modules. I started with a dual blue tooth GPS and did not like juggling keeping it charged along with my ipad, plus it never seemed to hold a charge after a week in my flight bag.

I would probably pay more for AV8OR updates, but Bendix-King's failware requires Windows. It's such a huge pain the posterior to borrow Windows systems for updates that I eventually gave up. Otherwise AV8OR is pretty amazing. I could never imagine before that a device with postage stamp sized screen can be this useful. I was too used to large screen devices like iPad and would never buy one myself. It was a present.

But if you have cockpit space, iPad should win on general utility. You can get airport diagrams and whatnot. Use it for websites like DUATS.

I pad with Foreflight with stratus. Like it ,can take it with me on other aircraft.
