Just curious...and being serious...

Has anyone seen/heard any public outcry advocating the ban of tractor-trailer rigs on our roads after the recent tragedy in California? I haven't, have I missed it?

You can bet your sweet ass if an airplane wiped out six school aged kids there'd be an outcry.

Anyone?

No, but the Feds are now going to re-evaluate bus safety rules.

That's probably overdue. I've always thought it was kind of stupid that there are no seat belts in busses. But I fully understand the cost/benefit aspect of it also.

There were seat belts in that bus. The victims were crushed by the impact and burned.

I bet some lawyers are going to be buying a new plane or two out of the winnings.

Hmmm save the lives of children or get the stuff I ordered off late night TV the next day? I'm guessing murica would rather have their stuff delivered then spare a few children.

Cost of doing business these days.

I'm sure a well intentioned lawmaker will propose some kind of new legislation in a knee jerk reaction to this.

According to what I heard, the bus had seatbelts which most were not using. As to the big rig, my guess is the driver suffered a catastrophic health event. And yes, I agree that if it were an aircraft, the hue and cry would be heard on Mars.
It was an accident. Stuff happens. In this case, very little can be done except to remove ALL 18 wheelers from the roadways. THAT we know will never happen.

I have a commercial drivers license in addition to my pilots licensee. You thought we had it rough with regulations in the aviation industry...it pales in comparison to all of the regulations in the trucking industry and restrictions on drivers and all the hoops they have to jump through. Be thankful there are enough of those guy that willing to put up for poverty wages to haul the cheap Chinese goods to Walmart so the rest of us can save a buck!

...but I am sure they will find a way to add another regulation in the name of safety.

Eliminate Fedex trucks, then you must eliminate UPS and all other carriers on the road. All shipping would grind to a halt. Not going to happen. Killing he economy like that is kinda bad. You would also never receive that new pilot gizmo you wanted either.

The only way to counter such stupidity is to grant it. "You get to spend a month living without anything delivered to you by truck."

If they don't starve, they'll have learned a lesson about transportation of goods and services.

I absolutely agree with Tim that we should ban them; I mean, who the hell needs a high-capacity truck that can carry so much stuff and deliver it so quickly? I think we should limit trucks to 10 items, or possibly even 7. Hell, I bet there are some that would advocate trucks that can only hold a single item at a time...

ROFL! Nicely done.

If anyone seriously thinks I'm advocating the banishment of 18-wheelers from our highways, then you either can't read or have the part of your brain that absorbs humor missing.

It got even funnier when people took the idea seriously.

Thank goodness because I need my slap chop and ginsu knives.

I see what you did there.... :yesnod:

I did have the very great pleasure of blocking in a UPS delivery truck a few months back. He pulled up to the usual block-all-other-cars location in front but he left enough room in front that I could pull in and block his exit. Another car was behind so he had to sit for a while. Man, that felt gooooooood.

I didn't, for sure. I just figure there probably really are probably dip-weeds out there who would be so dumb as to think it's even possible. LOL.

Oh, and we need to ban black trucks, they are just too scary looking. And don't forget to ban the automatic trucks, all trucks should be manual.

So, you're saying limit it to only those that can use the express lane? :wink2:

I agree. Think of the children. there's no reason anyone needs a truck like this.

Oh, absolutely. Obviously black things are automatically 10 times more dangerous...

I dunno, I think the aviation regulations are just as bad or worse. In fact, since many of the commercial ones essentially come from the carriers' OpSpecs, think of it like each trucking company having slightly different rules!

Also, it ain't poverty wages. For a good portion of the time I was driving I was making $60,000/year.

But I'd sure love to see some of those complainer/suer types live without anything from a truck for a year! Even better would be to make them a deal that they had to live without anything from a truck for a year unless & until they agreed to drive a truck the rest of the year. That'd be quite the learning experience for them.

Of course, they'd be much better people and much better drivers when they were done...

U want regulations? Try owning the trucking company. Seems everyday there is a new law that limits something in the trucking industry. It sucks but im too old to start over

I cross the GA/SC border everyday. It's amaZing the number of PSC cars out harassing the truckers.

We don't know what happened, yet. You are jumping to conclusions with no evidence.

It's actually not a bad point. You could limit the trucks to carry the load on the final 50 miles.

And instead of 2 day delivery u can get it in two weeks or whenever the RR says u can. There is a reason for all the over the road trucks. And #1 is time frame. It wouldn't matter to me. I'm in sand & gravel. Trains cant do what I do:wink2:

Huh...we know the truck came across the median and wiped out a bus. What else is there to know? It wouldn't matter to the "ban the truck" (or airplane) crowd why the truck did what it did...it's enough that it did it. If it wasn't allowed on the road in the first place then the accident wouldn't have occurred,

Next.

UPS uses the railroad for a lot of ground pkgs going coast to coast. However more of those loads are going back to sleeper team runs by truck, as the railroad has been consistently late more and more.

They just re-enacted the while accident using a bus and fed ex truck with all sorts of computer gear to try and figure it out. It was 40 miles from here so it's in the news daily..

Yes, but did they find a Truck simulator and some loser in a plaid shirt to demonstrate how it happened?

" I just figure there probably really are probably dip-weeds out there who would be so dumb as to think it's even possible."

Yup - And that dip-weed is your state and/or federal congressman.
Most of these losers would struggle keeping a job wiping tables.
But because they have no skills, and little common sense, and no job, they have the time to run for office while the rest of us have to work - and we believe what they promise fer gawds sake. (well, not ME. Once bit, twice shy, baby).

Put it back on rails....... :stirpot:

A large portion of it already is on the rails. Many large trucking companies have contract with e railroads for long distance shipping. UPS, FEDEX, and a few other get dedicated trains with guaranteed arrival times. It saves the trucking companies millions in fuel costs and gets the merchandise to it's destination in a reasonable time.
