I was just watching "Bait Car" while reading the POA post.
Bait Car, if you are not familiar, is a cop show where a car, rigged with cameras and audio, is parked and watched until car thieves take it.
The episode I just watched had one arrest where the car thief had 13 prior arrests ranging from drugs to gun possession!
My question is "why would anyone with 13 arrests be on the street at all"?
If I ever get arrested, I hope I can find his lawyer!!

You don't need his lawyer. You need his judge...

Not that the guy isn't a scumbag (he may be), but being arrested 13 times doesn't mean he was convicted 13 times or even once.

Just as "And so-and-so's house was raided last night. The police recovered a quantity of cash and a half dozen firearms." makes it sound like having cash and firearms is against the law. It ain't...

Back about 25 years ago, whenever the police arrested someone for anything violent, they ALWAYS claimed that he had a "quantity of pornography" in his home when it was searched.

Really? What was the quantity? Two copies of a playboy centerfold? A motorcycle babe calendar? could be anything and yet the press always fell for it hook, line and sinker.

Police are interested only in arrests. That's their job, not convictions. Ask Strauss-Kahn. That's going to follow him forever. Probably even get him elected!

And with the predicatable impact on our relationship with France. Not that it matters, since it's hard to think it could get much worse, or that anybody on either side really cares.

Our local police chief is a guest on a weekly talk show. He continually rants about all the people they arrest only to have the judge let them go because there is not enough money to incarcerate everyone that needs it. (Or because the judge feels sorry for him because the poor guy was abused as a child). He has cited examples of arresting people with hundreds of priors. But that bait car is really cool. We have a few of them here and the people that get caught generally get put away because of the severity of the crime and the video evidence.
