Bailout near Augusta, GA

At first I thought I had flown that plane when a student of mine was shopping around, but I checked my logbook and saw that it was one digit off. It does look familiar though.

I would love to know why he just happen to have a chute with him.
It looks suspiciously like insurance fraud.
That or the guy was a hardcore Boy Scout and took the "be prepared" thing to heart in a serious way.
It reminds me of the dude who bilked all those people out of cash and then tried to fake his own death by calling in an emergency, then jumping from his Malibu and letting the plane crash.
It will be interesting to see what the NTSB has to say.

The crash photo does look like the Flightaware photo. Notice how the flightaware info lists the plane as a "Turbo Commander 690"...flightaware fail lol.

As for insurance fraud, I'll throw my hat into that ring.

Be interested in seeing if he has a history of wearing a chute or if it's a recent change in behavior.

That was my first thought; how many people in a non-acro airplane wear or have a parachute with them?
Not many, I'd venture, but if I had taken the trouble to buy one, I might bring it along all the time just in case, just like the helmet that I was given that I wear.

Strange. No, this is not someone I know.
