Is anyone going

http://www.copperstate.org/csj/

Its in two months and I was wondering if anyone was going.

I'm nervous about the non tower procedures. I think this is the first year without some sort of Tower. Is there any tips for flying into this event? I'm flying from KCHD.

My advice is to drive. That place can be bad enough without any formal activity taking place. There always seem to be bozos flying their own traffic patterns and not sequencing themselves very well. You are a short drive away and there will be no stress enroute and you can avoid someone cutting you off it won't ruin your day.

I always drive, it's actually quicker to drive as opposed to drive out to FFZ, prep and fly the plane down to it.... it can be the wild west down there at the best of times.

I guess I like the Idea of being part of the Pilot crowd flying into the event. I really don't want the stress and I will have my 12yr son with me. Also I'm a low time private pilot which also makes me nervous flying into a big event like this.

Does anyone fly into the Coolidge monthly breakfast flyin? I think I'm going to fly in for the first time in Oct.

Same issues prevail there. It can be done safely. Don't be surprised to see 2-3 planes on the same runway. 1 turning off , 1 rolling out and 1 touching down and 2 short final. Be alert and it can be fun.

I can handle that. I experience that a couple of weeks ago flying into Coolidge. There were 3 in the pattern, 1 on the runway and a Heli doing touch and goes. This was Coolidge for all places. I was expecting a ghost town airport.

Same dates as Reklaw in TX. Hmmmmmm...

I may fly down from Colorado Springs for it. I tried a couple years ago but only made it to Tucson and we hit some really strong winds and ended up visiting the air museum there and flying back to the Springs without making it to the show.

Always try to make it. Usually drive. Last year there was no tower and friends said it wasn't bad. Couldn't be any worse than a busy Coolidge first-saturday. I'm always disappointed that by noon on Sat. everyone is starting to tear down and getting ready to leave.

Have you been to Coolidge monthly fly in?

Planning on flying down for it.

PRC. Hoping to fly down Friday and back home Saturday.

I flew in last year in light formation with another R182. We broke off before the pattern. The traffic wasn't too bad, people seemed to be talking accurately. My only grip was the guy who decided to make a left downwind departure while there were several aircraft in the pattern at TPA. It wasn't a fast climber so it was climbing up above us in the pattern. I think departing straight out for a few miles would have been better. If my airplane was working I'd fly in again but I don't think it will be by then.

Can't this year. I'm hoping to next year in my as yet not flying Glasair III. Just a little too far in my Glastar. Please tell us about it and post pics when you get back.

Todd have you been before? That is a good distance from your location.

Nope, the only bigger type fly in I haven't been to. Can't wait to go, hopefully next year. The Glasair III will cover that in just a few hours. I understand it's really old school as fly ins go. More about airplanes and people, not an airshow!

I'll be flying in as co-pilot in my friend's plane tomorrow morning. Never been before. Wife and I plan to go Saturday.
Stop by the booth with Southern Arizona Flying Services and Sierra Vista Municipal. You will see how easy it is to fly into Sierra Vista Municipal/Libby Army Airfield. Lots to see here: Tombstone, Kartchner Caverns, hiking, Ft Huachuca museum, and more.
Nice cross country from Phoenix, about an hour.

Glasair its more of a Flyin Gathering than an actual airshow. Its still worth attending.

Flying J I used to be Stationed at FT Huachuca in 1993 so I know the area well. This was before my PPL days.

For those that are flying into this non towered controlled event be careful out there and communicate communicate and communicate your intensions.

And forego the "any traffic in the area please advise" calls.

I would be thankful if you can write up something about your experience flying in. Example air traffic conditions and procedures.

I'm driving but might fly in next year. We will see.

Thanks.
Wasn't bad at all. Arrived around 0900 with about 10 airplanes inbound. Everyone sequenced themselves in and kept transmissions short, brief, and to the point. CGZ is easy with major roads and landmarks on traffic pattern entry points.

I'd say there's no reason not to fly in!

I was listening to ctaf and it sounded like everyone was coordinating with each other and following non towered procedures. Maybe next year I will give it a try and fly in. It would be a good experience. I took a lot of pictures and will post tomorrow.

Good to see the old Skyvans

Some Pictures.

I will post more later
