OK, one of the really nice things on the web over the years has been AvWeb's Picture of the Week column. Nice full sized photos, makes for excellent wallpapers, highlighting the many great photos we have of planes.

Well, they redesigned the website and the POTW is now reduced to a small thumbnailed, square format window. UGH! If you agree and want the POTW of the week returned to using:

1. Full sized original photos
2. NO windowed thumbnail that squeezes photos to unusual formats

Just Email Scott Simmons , Webmaster, POTW Editor with your comments

Just check this out and see if you agree... they really messed with one of the nicer things on the web...

Check out what the Velocity on take off looks like....sort of pug nosed.

From another person:

As a sometime web developer, I can affirm that it's not the photographer that is sending poorly formatted pictures: it's the web application's assumption that all photos must be displayed only in style="width:580px;height:435px;" format.

Not only that, but the picture that has been placed on the web site and then squashed into 580x435 format has already been severely reduced in resolution.

Here's the current picture in its original format (after avweb made it small, but before they squished it):

It's actually 580x385, (clearly the web developer has taken the 16 megapixel original and limited it to a maximum of 580 pixels wide or 435 pixels high, whichever is smaller).

Same thing with http://www.avweb.com/media/gallery/p182in6t3s1r7e6bt1fq9tid1iic7.jpg

The original picture was almost certainly a 16 megapixel 4912 x 3264 image, based on the fact it was taken with a Sony A55 in HDR mode.

The end result is that instead of having an image that could be used as a screen saver background or background image for screen, or even printing, it's good for nothing.

The more I look at this, the less I like it.

Avweb - "improved website" - fail.

Thanks all, they have the original size now posted and things in the universe are now in harmony.

Whew. Man, we were worried. Free websites not working right is utterly terrifying. :)
