The Airport Kid:

This one was different. Sure, he would hang on the fence looking in but when he realized he too could be a pilot he did it in a big way. Coming from a family of money, in his late teens he would show up at the Burbank airport in a new model Mercedes. Or sometimes he arrived in a chauferred stretch limosine.

Anyway, this young man showed promise. Within 45 days and 42 hours flight time he earned his Pvt Pilot. But he was also his instructor's first student to bust the checkride. The bust was due to the applicant flying a big U from downwind to final, instead of squaring his turns.

This man went on to experience great success in aviation as he acquired many pilot certificates and ratings. His name is Steven Udvar-Hazy and the picture is of Gene Cordero. Gene was Steven's first CFI.

Gene and I have become great friends. Gene currently flies Pt 135 scenic tours and cargo runs based out of KPGA Page, AZ. Gene often flies the "party plane".
