I upgraded not initially after my avionics upgrade. I found a deal on 440
Which turned out it needed to be upgraded so
The deal cost as much as new.

The 540 was bricked during a softwares upgrade and it took forever to get it returned. Now it goes on the blink at random times during the flight.

So off it goes again. I’m borrowing a 530 which is probably at least 30 years old to
Replace the 540.

Anyone else have great success with avidyne

I have installed and flown a bunch of Avidynes. They are very reliable overall. Probably just as good as Garmin as far as that goes. You got unlucky, it appears.

Interesting the 530 is "at least" 30 years old as it was introduced in 1998.

Have no complaints with avidyne. But I haven't bought anything second hand.

What do you mean “on the blink”?

No similar issues with my IFD-540, I think going on 6-7 years, maybe more?

I know if power is interrupted during a software update that it will brick and need to be sent in. Aux power is recommended if the upgrade is done other than on the bench.
