Aviators To Honor N.C.'s First Pilot

POSTED: 5:48 pm EDT October 27, 2005

COATS, N.C. -- Aviation enthusiasts -- including an astronaut and combat pilots -- plan to help honor the first licensed pilot in North Carolina's history with a historical marker.
The marker will go up Nov. 5 near the site of the family home in Coats of Alton Stewart. Stewart was a barnstormer, racing pilot and flight instructor who died in a plane crash in Dunn on Christmas Day in 1929 at the age of 31.
His flying career began after he repaired a World War I plane forced to land in Harnett County in 1919. Military aviators gave him flying instructions and six hours later he was flying solo.
Orville Wright is said to have signed his pilot's license.
William Thornton, a Duplin County native who made two space flights in the space shuttle Challenger, is the scheduled featured speaker.

Now THAT would be an event worthy of attending. I bet that turns into one heck of a fly-in!

I will have to see when it is and if I can attend if it hasn't already happened. If I go I will let you know how it turned out.
