So - if you saw this job description:

Provide assistance to AOPA members via the AOPA Pilot Information Center. Responsible to respond to a wide variety of subjects such as aircraft ownership, regulations, medical certification and other general aviation issues.

What would you think the job is doing, really? Is this call center work?

Yup. Taking calls, searching an on-line FAQ, and passing tough questions on to level 2.

Anyone know how the cost of living rates in Frederick?

Sounds like a CSR job to me....

Speaking of CSR, anyone catch this little piece of work?

It got a mention - no, it got 4 minutes of time on Keith Olberman last night. Along with the web video of the Comcast technician that fell asleep on someone's sofa while on hold... with Comcast tech support.

Ouch.

You know the saying, if you have to ask.....

Frederick is at the northern edge of the DC metro area, and the western edge of the Baltimore area. A lot of people commute into DC from there (a/k/a "drive 'till you qualify").

Housing expense will be the biggest chunk. From what I can tell, the rest may not be too much higher than Abq.

Why not drop a PM to Robert over on the red board?

I live in Montgomery county MD which is more expensive than Fredrick, and when we say expensive it's obscene. I work in downtown DC and have a 1.3 hour commute each way, which is too long, I don't know how people out in FDK do it.
Fredrick has gotten nicer in the last few years, and the town itself is pretty cute these days, but of course more pricey. There are a ton of expensive planned communities near FDK now. Of course you could opt to live far out from FDK (I'm thinking north) and not have to deal with too much traffic and probably get a pretty good price on a home, but probably nowhere near the cheapness of ALB.
Send me a PM if you want more.

FDK is also a pretty neat airport, but I hate the damn place. Too many planes for there not to be a tower there.

Speaking of which, anybody know why there isn't a tower at FDK? Hagerstown has a tower with only 150 daily ops, while FDK is at 400 with no tower. It's like stepping into a knife fight over there...

I suspect it's related to airline traffic or the lack thereof.

My home airport KCDW (how is miss it) has never seen an airliner and has a nice tower, neither does KMMU, or KTEB for that matter.
There is something more there....

Well, as someone who learned to fly at FDK, and who has flown from there for the past ten years, I don't think that a tower is warranted. Follow the rules you (should) have learned about ops at non-towered airports and you'll be fine. The only airport I've ever gotten scared at has been Gaithersburg, where a few based pilots seemed to think they owned the airspace and had no problems making a straight-in to 14 with multiple airplanes in the pattern.

And flying around Manassas (with a tower) is much scarier than operating at Frederick.

Frederick real estate was nuts a year ago (as was all of the DC area), but is more reasonable now. I'm not sure what AOPA pays, but Frederick is not out of line compared to the rest of the region.

I guess it is the whole four runways thing, I've been there with people shooting ILS onto one runways, students staying in the pattern on the other, and yet another transient pilot lost somewhere in the pattern for one or both of the runways....
GAI you at least have only two runways to contend with. I just don't like all that traffic without somebody sorting things out from a tower. Maybe I've just had bad experiences at FDK, like the time two people were fighting over the frequency, while people were attempting to make their calls.

If you are in the area, give me a PM, we can meet up.

I don't think Robert lives in Frederick. People one level higher live and commute from West Va just to make ends meet.

And even that's not as "affordable" as most would like it to be. 30 minutes from Harper's Ferry to FDK. Drove it this last Monday.....

To "cut to the chase", you're likely not going to be able to live anywhere near Fredrick for what AOPA is going to pay you.
