Well, I knew it was coming and Tuesday was the day... Instead of my beloved Aviation Consumer my mailbox had a copy of Flying magazine in it. Something I didn't want.

I have been a loyal Aviation Consumer subscriber for more than 15 years, and had a paid-up subscription through Spring of 2028. I knew the end was coming, but thought that Firecrown would at least warn me, give me options, etc. No, just an unwanted copy of Flying.

It was with very low expectations that I emailed Firecrown, stating that I did not want Flying and would like a refund. I included all of the info from my mailing label. so that they could find my subscription. I frankly did not expect to hear from them.

TO MY SURPRISE I received a very polite email from Firecrown. She verified thay my subscription had been ported from Aviation Consumer to Flying, but that if I wanted a refund they would be happy to offer one. She asked to verify my address, which I did. A couple of hours later, I received an email back from her verifying that a check would be sent out within a week.

I still do not like Firecrown and what they have done to great aviation publications like AC, IFR, and Kitplanes. Don't like them at all. But at least they were very responsive to my request to cancel my subscription and offer a refund.

I would recommend that if you have a subscription to one of the cancelled magazines and don't want Flying, that you email them with your request.

When they first took over, Firecrown wasn't paying the writers and employees.

I don't know about the employees, but the company did start sending me the money I was owed for previous articles. And I just got a notification that another check is on the way.

How and/or Why does someone prepay a magazine subscription for 3+ years?

Your post reminded me that I still had a subscription for IFR Magazine. I went to log in and cancel, only to be told my password was incorrect. Fine, I’ll reset it. But the reset link demands my old password before letting me create a new one. Seriously? Who thought that was a good idea? Last time I ran into this, I made a mental note to call them by phone (they are only available Monday through Friday during business hours), and of course I forgot to call. Hearing your story, I sent them an email this time. Hopefully I'll get a response.

Only when you come across a great product that you are sure you will want for ever, like IFR magazine, or lifetime memberships in some organizations. It removes the hassle of remembering to pay renewal fees and having to update credit card expiration dates even in the case of autorenewals.

I'm straining to remember when I subscribed to mags. I remember there are often little "subscribe now!" cards with options like 6 mo, 1 year, and maybe 2 year?

Sorry, I wasn't throwing shade, I was actually wondering if there was at some point a 3, 5, whatever length subscription option for AC? or does one call the publisher and shove a bunch of moolah at them? It struck me as unusual. It strikes me as even more unusual that they refunded -- I suspect that loophole will close soon :)

Sending a different magazine and, wha, hoping you don't notice? That's pretty cheeky.
