Avatar - what am I missing

So, I've created a less-than 100x100bit BMP avatar, less than whatever the Kb size limit is. Why is it "not a valid image?"

Should I do this in MSExp, instead of Firefox?

Should I do this in MSExp, instead of Firefox?

Save it as a JPG or a GIF instead of a BMP.
