Anyone have any experience with the AV8OR ACE? It sure looks awesome.

How are updates done. How much do they cost?
Realistically, does it function as a reliable EFB?
Is it speedy in its response or sluggish? The video kind of looks sluggsish.
How good is the driving mode?

I saw one in the display case at the Avionics shop yesterday. Ummm, I'm not so sure I'd describe it as "awesome."

Get a Samsung Q1 ultra or the Fujitsu (whatever the model number is) along with Flightsoft and Vista or APIC. It'll cost less and give more capability with geo-referenced plates. Yes, it will have external GPS and weather receivers.
With either mentioned software, the annual subscription is much, much cheaper...

I'll chime in, however I am no expert in GPS units.

I fly an RV6A and up until now have used Anywheremap running on a Dell PDA. The GPS program was great, just that I could not see the dang display in sunlight. I didn't want to go to a big tablet PC, so at OSH I hit the ground in search of a unit that would be more readable but not take over the space in the cockpit. I knew that Garmin was a real contender for what I needed, but the price was a turn off. So my search continued.

I gave Anywheremap a chance and looked at their ATC unit. Took it outside and had the same sunlight readability trouble. Then I happened by the Bendix/King booth and took a look at the smaller Av8tor. Again, not impressed with its screen brightness in sun. Then I tried the Ace and it looked like it would work. I like the larger screen as well (50+ old eyes).

I am happy to report that I really like my Ace. I have it mounted in a spot that makes it very visible and usable. It is paired with XMWX and a Zaon XRX via bluetooth. I really like the link with the XRX, as you can set the Ace to provide a function where if there is an alert from the XRX, the Ace will display the XRX info full screen from any map/view that you are currently using. That and the audible alert via the headset gets your attention.

If you are taking the unit from plane to plane, do not rely on battery power as the unit eats up the juice. It comes with two battery packs, and the smaller of the two will only last about an hour or so. Not sure about the larger one. I have mine set to use ship's power at all times.

As I said, the screen brightness is good, much better than the PDA that I was using. I have had no problems navigating around the unit and finding/using its various functions. No problems with the touch screen, even in bumpy air. I have not used the Chart function as yet so I cannot comment on that. I am just pleased that I can see it, and that it works so well with the peripheral units it is paired with.

I have used the driving function a couple of times and it too works well. The female voice telling me that I am exceeding the speed limit gets a bit annoying tho! This is the first time that I have used a GPS in a car, other than the one in my wife's car, so I really can't make any comparisons. I do find it quite intuitive and have been able to find/drive to an address with no trouble.

All in all, I am a happy camper.

didn't king buy a software platform for this and then develop it as their own? I can't remember what it was called though. We had it running on a tablet PC in the 421s. I preferred the 396.
