Am in Austin, but am interested in things a close GA flight away excluding San Antonio (been there a lot). Hamburger runs, things to see, etc.

Cooper's in Llano for lunch. Better than Hard 8. Salt Lick, in Driftwood is better (if you get all you can eat and can put a dent in their profit margin as I did when I was young).

Dixie Chicken in College Station for adult beverages.

Chris Madrid's in SA for burgers.

New Braunfelds for good German food.

San Marcos' Sewell Park for T&A (it is great when Texas State is in session).

Not aviation related, but 6th street, when in Austin...6th Street.

Usually refuel at Llano, but haven't hit Coopers yet. Was thinking Fredericksburg just to see what the Hangar Hotel looks like (already saw the Pacific Myseum).

Was in Houston years ago and flew an Arrow to an on field place with burgers and shakes that was 1950's themed. Seeing if anything like that within 125 miles of Austin

That was the Southern Flyer Diner at 11R. It is currently closed but is supposed to reopen. I do not know the details.

Isn't Austin considered the music capitol of Texas?

I heard the pilots who slow their airplanes with breaks and park in hangers consider Austin the music capitol of Texas.

Agreed. Unfortunately, it's the only fly-in place with food anywhere close due to numerous closures of food places on/in-vicinity of local airports.

Why didn't you say so earlier? We could have planned something for the weekend. It was dang hot but still we could have done something.
Are you still in town? For how long? Where you parked? Where you sleeping? :)

    Used to be.
Not much anymore with the retarded Californians who moved here, bought out shhhload of condos downtown, filed loud-music complaints and got numerous venues shut down. Not many places to go listen to live music anymore.

Echo 6th street. Austin is an awesome town, and I would live there if it wasn't so expensive to live in the city.

Just my opinion, but... 6th Street, ewwww. Lotta drunk college kids and sketchy looking (and smelling) homeless dudes.

Granted, I'm on the the verge of being a crusty old fart at 48, but for me in the downtown area, I much prefer the food trucks, bars, pubs and restaurants on Rainey Street. If you like beer, Craft Pride and Banger's Pub are a "must see"...

And the 50's Diner in Cameron is open again. Not on the field, but a short walk for good food.

School's out. Kids are gone. College Station is quiet.

Canyon Lake is a fun place. German food in Fredericksburg or Boerne. I haven't been to Marble Falls or Horseshoe Bay but that's on my list.

Was only there the weekend for father's day. I'm there quite often, as my child is attending UT (senior). Have flown in about 15-20 times (Austin Exec). Left yesterday and had to head SW initially to avoid that storm.

When my son was checking schools, we stopped by 6th street for lunch on a Saturday. Lot's of passed out people on the sidewalks/alleys still from the night before.

Maybe we could organize a fly-in after the cold front (it should come back down to high 80's for a few days, yay).

Np. Let us know ahead of time next time and we could do a fly-out/fly-in or something. Any reason to fly. :)

Food and service were great. I went there last Sunday and on the way back to the airport we passed around 10 people who had flown in and were headed over. Hopefully they stick around this time!

I have family in San Antonio. If Stinson has their diner open again, could stop there on the next trip.

Someone needs to tell them to swap Monday and Sunday... they are missing a big opportunity not being open for Sunday Lunch.

Not Northgate, and that's what you recommended. I like the lack of traffic but Northgate is way more fun when the students are in town. But that area's changing scary fast. It isn't what it used to be.

My favorite so far is KRAS, and staying at Amelia's Landing. They'll let you use their crew car if you stay there, and the coastline makes for a nice scenic flight.

I was responding to the first post: "interested in things a close GA flight away excluding San Antonio (been there a lot). Hamburger runs, things to see, etc.". The only thing to see in Austin proper is transplants from other states and traffic.

It's a very reasonable flight from Austin. I used to fly from San Antonio to KRAS (or RKP) for lunch.

I delivered the lumber when Dixie Chicken was being built along with the other places along the street. And I haven't been there in years, but a lot of people seem to like that area so I will send folks there. I bet it has changed a lot. Do they still have the rattle snakes inside?

I had pretty much left the area by 2000. About 3 times a year I would go back to visit my mom, but she left the area in 2011. I still get back there occasionally to visit friends. I'll plan trips when the students are gone along with the summer heat and humidity, which doesn't leave much time to visit.....

I was just joking around about how far we've gone from the title of the post... Austin Area Things to See. It's 145 mile flight!
