So I was flying (actually riding) in the back seat yesterday. On my headset I could hear all comms within the plane, but I couldn't hear ATC. Also, when ATC was on, passenger comms were muted from pilot headset.

It was a Garmin audio box, but I'm not sure of the model.

This is different from full pilot iso I am familiar with.
Anyone know what settings this scenario describes?

The GMA340 Audio Panel (don't get me started about the serviceability of this piece of crap) has two isolate modes on the audio panel. The PILOT isolate puts the radios through to the pilot and isolates him from the other right seat and rear intercom. The CREW isolate puts the front seats and ATC together and isolates off the back seats. There's a separate music input available for the isolated passengers as well.
