ASOS out in the fields

Why are there 6 ASOS near the intersection of the Colorado, Wyoming and Nebraska borders? They show up on SkyVector.com. The ASOS identities are K1AW, K1BW, K1DW, K1FW, K1OW, K1LW. They don't appear to be associated with airports.
 
Those are probably MET Towers for a wind study to determine if those are good locations to build a wind farm.
 
We have a ASOS locally that’s in BFE National Forest lands for some unknown reason. Most guess it’s a hold over from a long gone Forest Service research program.

I think the most famous off airport ASOS is the one in the middle of Central Park NYC.
